My Awareness Mission
As I reflect on the course of events that have molded the women’s lib movement over the past 100 plus years, I realize hopes and dreams can be diminished by circumstances and situations. I also realize that second-hand knowledge and misinterpretation of events and actions, when left unchecked, can diminish the potency of a vision.
My generation experienced, in the women’s movement, a resurgence of the principles of democracy, of equal rights for all. Our children accept these truths with a sense of entitlement. Still, I recognize, with growing clarity, that there is a need to expand our voice to include future generations, not only at home, but abroad.
A Global Perspective – A Universal Truth
As we wind down our careers and adjust to our empty nests, we stalwart libbers have left our feminist mark on domestic soil. Now, as we educate ourselves and broaden our global perspective, I believe it is inevitable that we will leave our feminist mark on the world.
As with any great cause, there is always an underlying truth. The principle of equality for all is based on one universal truth – that unconditional love and compassion are inherent in our human makeup. It is a simple but profound truth. Mothers and sisters around the world exemplify this truth each and every day in their love for their families.
It is a truth that has been a driving force in my evolution as a feminist. I may not see a truly global community, free of political and religious borders, in my lifetime. But, I also never thought I would see the day when a young man in Egypt could launch a revolution with social media; how his government could not dispel the masses that refused to raise a gun or a fist in their protest of an oppressive dictator; and how a regime of 30 years could be toppled in less than one month.
I refuse to give up my hope that this universal truth will inspire us to join hands as we feministas aspire to stand shoulder to shoulder with the mothers of the world and cultivate awareness within our solidarity as a human race.
